Learning Mah Jongg should feel just as fun as playing it. I teach with a relaxed, upbeat style that makes the National Mah Jongg League rules easy to understand. You don’t need to play in tournaments to enjoy the game — whether you’re brand‑new or polishing advanced skills, I’m here to make your Mah Jongg journey smooth, simple, and joyful.
I learned to play American Mah Jongg many years ago when my children were in preschool at Wright‑Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. As my kids grew, I stayed busy with work, volunteering, and community life — I’ve always been a very social person. A few years ago, I realized many of my closest friends were retiring and moving away. I remembered how much fun I’d had playing Mah Jongg years ago with so many interesting people, and I decided to pick it up again.
I credit the many wonderful players I’ve met for helping me grow into a confident, enthusiastic teacher. I’ve now taught almost 100 people through group and private lessons, and even placed 4th in the 2026 Northern Virginia Mah Jongg League seven‑week tournament.

The National Mah Jongg League creates the official yearly card and rules for American Mah Jongg, giving players a shared standard so everyone can learn, play, and compete with confidence,
You must have a card to be able to make hands. New card every year. Available from PJ or direct order. $15.
About the Game
Origins in China
Mah Jongg began in China in the mid‑19th century, growing out of earlier tile games played in royal courts and busy port cities. It quickly became a favorite social pastime, blending strategy, symbolism, and lively table play.
The game reached the United States in the early 1920s and became an instant craze, spreading through department stores and social clubs. By 1937, American players formalized their own style of play with the creation of the National Mah Jongg League.
